Placing an implant is a surgical procedure. Some rules of conduct should therefore be observed so that your dental implant can heal without complications. After the procedure, your cooperation is required to support the healing process. Please bear in mind that a small wound has been created in your jaw and that the implant will need some time to fuse with the jaw. A healing time of around 6 to 12 weeks (without bone augmentation) can be expected.
Behavior after the insertion of an implant
What can you do to support the healing process of your new dental implant?
Accompanying person
An accompanying person should accompany you home from the surgery. After an operation in twilight sleep or under general anesthesia, you must not drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours. An accompanying person must be present.
Pain and slight postoperative bleeding
Pain and slight postoperative bleeding are normal on the first day after the operation. You can take a mild painkiller to treat the pain. Any bleeding that occurs can be stopped by biting on a clean, rolled-up tissue.
Swelling
Swelling that increases in the first few days and then subsides within a week is also normal at first.
Excessive bleeding
If you experience excessive bleeding or if you still feel swelling and pain at the implantation site several days after the procedure, please do not hesitate to call the practice or the emergency number provided!
Cooling
Soon after the operation you should cool the treated area externally, but with interruptions, as otherwise hypothermia may occur.
Heat, on the other hand, should be avoided!
Rest
Rest is the order of the day after the operation! Avoid sport and other physical exertion for the first few days.
Food & drink
Eating & drinking: You will soon be able to drink water again after the operation. As the local anesthesia continues for a few hours after the operation, eating is only permitted again once it has worn off. Avoid hot drinks and food at first and stick to mushy food that can be eaten without strong chewing forces.
Alcohol, nicotine, coffee
Alcohol, nicotine, coffee and black tea are irritants to the wound and should be avoided during the wound healing phase.
Brush your teeth
You can already brush your teeth in the evening. However, be sure to skip the operated area. An antiseptic mouthwash also supports wound healing (3 times a day, gently rinse the area).
Snow ban
If surgery has been performed on the maxillary sinus, cutting is prohibited until the stitches have been removed!
Medication
Medication containing acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin, Thomapyrin or Dolomo) can cause secondary bleeding and should be avoided. Talk to us if you are unsure.
We wish you a speedy and complication-free recovery!
