Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions from patients

Many of our patients are considering dentures or implants for the first time. The initial question is often whether an implant is the right method of tooth replacement at all, what costs to expect or what the treatment procedure looks like. We would like to answer some of your questions in advance.

However, this information cannot replace an individual consultation with an implantology specialist. However, it does provide an initial insight into the diverse and modern possibilities that implantology offers us today. If you have any further questions, please contact us – the Implant Center Hamm – your specialists for oral and maxillofacial surgery.

When are implants suitable?

as a single-tooth implant to replace just one tooth

The implant supports the denture like an artificial tooth root. Firmly anchored in the jaw, it transmits the chewing force. Due to the even load, the jawbone remains stressed and does not recede. Ceramic crowns are adapted in shape and color so that they are indistinguishable from the patient’s own teeth.

for implant-supported bridges for larger tooth gaps

Bone loss and the removal of healthy tooth substance can be prevented if implants form the pillars for bridges. This implant solution is also particularly suitable for the so-called “free-end gap” (missing molars).

for a toothless jaw

If the jaw is completely edentulous, a non-removable implant bridge is suitable for replacing all teeth on several implants. In some cases, a removable, implant-supported prosthesis is also used. Your dentist will inform you about the advantages and disadvantages of both implant solutions depending on your individual case.

Is implantation painful?

An implantation is only carried out on the basis of a detailed preliminary examination and diagnosis by your dentist and by us at the Implant Center Hamm. In this way, we can ensure that we know the exact condition of your jaw and teeth. The implantation itself is performed under local anesthesia. The placement of the dental implant is therefore completely pain-free for you. Sedation is always an option when longer and more complex treatments are planned. It serves to relieve the patient and is therefore also suitable for anxious patients. Implantation under general anesthesia is also possible on request. In general, implantation is a safe, minimally invasive routine procedure. The tissue-sparing procedures create the optimum conditions for complication-free and rapid wound healing. Pain is therefore only mild to moderate after the procedure (depending on the extent of the procedure). In these cases, an antibiotic and a painkiller are prescribed to alleviate post-operative pain.

How much does the implantation cost?

The cost of a dental implant depends on the complexity and difficulty of the procedure. The following factors play a role here:

  • Diagnostics (scans, digital volume tomographs)
  • Preparatory measures (sinus lift/bone augmentation)
  • Number of implants
  • Material of the implant
  • Laboratory costs for the manufacture of dentures

We understand that the question of the cost of an implant plays an important role in the patient’s decision-making process. Cost transparency is therefore important to us. Before the implantation, you will receive a detailed cost estimate from us, which will provide you with detailed information about all services. We also recommend that you enquire with your health insurance company about the respective conditions of subsidization. Implants are not covered by statutory health insurance. However, the so-called superstructure (crown, bridge, prosthesis) is. Here you will receive a fixed amount (which is based on the costs of standard care). If you can show a well-maintained bonus booklet for the last 5 or 10 years, this fixed allowance from the health insurance company for the so-called superstructure (crown, bridge, prosthesis) will be increased. In the case of private health insurance or private supplementary dental insurance, the assumption of costs is regulated individually and depends on your tariff.
